Council House (Vidhan Bhawan),Lucknow

"On 15 December 1922, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Spencer Harcourt Butler laid the foundation of the Council House (Vidhan Bhawan) in Lucknow and the building was inaugurated on February 21, 1928."
The building was designed by Samuel Swinton Jacob and Heera SinghSingh also drew up the blueprint of the building and The construction of the building was done by Messrs Martin and Co.
At that time the building was completed in little over five years at a cost of ₹21 lakh (US$33,000).It is one of the finest examples of Indo-European architectural craftsmanship of the twentieth century. The building is made of carved light brown sandstone from Mirzapur. Many of the inside halls, galleries and verandas are built of marble from Agra and Jaipur. Circular marble staircases run on both sides of the entrance hall and the walls of the staircases are embellished with paintings. At the centre of the crescent is a large Gothic dome with an attractive “Chhatri” or sky light. The main chamber of the building is octagonal in shape with circular and dome shaped roof. There are large lobbies for Members on both sides of this hall.
A separate chamber proposal for meetings and office rooms of the Legislative Council was held in July, 1935. The construction work was entrusted to M / s Ford and McDonald. The extension building was constructed by Chief Architect A. M. Martiman, which was completed in November, 1937, under Public Works Department. This building of the Legislative Council is connected to the rooms and verandas built on either side of the main building.
This Building has great importance in both history of India and Administration Process in Uttar Pradesh.Every five years new election is done. And new assembly is elected by the people of Uttar Pradesh. This is a huge and beautiful building which gives many great and powerful leaders to the nation as well as Uttar Pradesh aslo.
